Sprale
Privacy Policy
Last updated: 22 October 2026
This policy explains what information the Sprale iOS app (“Sprale”, “the app”, “we”) uses, why, and the choices you have. Sprale is built to help you read and grow your vocabulary, and it collects only what it needs to do that.
In short
- You don’t create an account. There’s no name, email or password.
- Word definitions come from the dictionary built into your iPhone.
- Your dictionary words, bookmarks and reading progress are stored securely with Google Firebase, linked to an anonymous ID, so they’re kept between sessions.
- We don’t sell your data, show ads, or use third-party analytics or tracking.
Information the app uses
Anonymous identifier. When you first open Sprale, it signs you in anonymously with Firebase Authentication. This creates a random user ID that isn’t tied to your name, email or phone number. It’s used only to keep your data separate from everyone else’s.
Your reading data. To make your dictionary, bookmarks and library work, the app stores the following against your anonymous ID:
- Words you look up or save, the sentence they appeared in, and the title of the reading they came from
- Readings you bookmark
- Your reading progress, such as which readings you completed, whether you marked them “Feel Confident” or needed help, how many words you looked up, and when
Dictionary lookups. Definitions are shown using the dictionaries built into iOS. The app doesn’t send the words you tap to a third-party dictionary service.
Technical data. Like any internet service, Firebase may process technical information such as your IP address and device or app version when the app connects, in order to deliver the service and keep it secure.
How we use it
We use this information only to provide the app’s features: showing today’s reading, keeping your dictionary and bookmarks, marking readings where you needed help, and keeping the service running reliably. We don’t use it for advertising, and we don’t sell or rent it to anyone.
Service providers
Sprale uses Google Firebase (Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore) to authenticate the anonymous ID and store your reading data. Google processes this data on our behalf under its own terms:
Data retention and deletion
Your data is kept for as long as you use the app. You can remove individual words from your dictionary and clear highlights at any time in the app. Because your data is linked to an anonymous ID rather than an account, deleting the app means the app can no longer access that data.
To have all data associated with your copy of Sprale deleted, email us at spraleapp@gmail.com and we’ll help you.
Security
Data is sent to Firebase over encrypted connections and stored on Google’s infrastructure. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
Links to other sites
Readings or this website may contain links to other sites. We don’t control those sites and aren’t responsible for their content or privacy practices, so please review their policies.
Children’s privacy
Sprale isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us and we’ll delete it.
